For the past year-ish, I’ve been using knowspam.net to keep out all of the truckloads of spam that get sent to my primary address.
It was pretty cool at first. Whitelist spam solutions have their downsides, but spam never got through to the inbox on my computer, and that makes a happy Katie.
Except that the developer hasn’t, uh, developed it at all in over a year. He never announced to his users that the project was going to sit around gathering dust, he just moved on. That, to me, is a bit of a jerky move. I mean, we’re paying $20 a year for this service and even the most basic of bugs aren’t being fixed — bugs that have been around for a couple of years now.
So now I’m relying on Mail.app’s built-in spam filter, which I estimate to be somewhere around 95% accurate. 95% is good, except when you get two or three hundred spams a day. Maybe it’ll get better with more training (it already has), but I’m interested to hear how other people are filtering out spam on POP3 accounts.
I mean, there’s gotta be something new and awesome out there, right?
(Non-answers like “use Gmail” and “get a new address” need not apply.)

Whether you’ve heard of the Decemberists or not, check out their new video for 16 Military Wives, available via torrent on their website. It’s catchy and clever.
And if you like ‘em and live in Lawrence, they’re playing at the Granada on April 5.

A furry iBook. Tempting, but I’m not sure I like the idea of needing a flea collar for my laptop.

So I’m working my usual shift in the journalism lab, and I find myself unmotivated to do anything productive because I’m just counting the hours until Spring Break starts.
My first attempt at keeping busy involved Windexing all the monitors in the newsroom to get rid of all the greasy fingerprints off the screens. This usually works, but now I’m getting practiced at it and it doesn’t take as long as it used to. So much for Plan A.
Now I’m mid-Plan B. I’ve covered my sad, ashy hands in stinky shea butter hand repair cream in an attempt to save my skin from just drying up and falling off, which seems to be the direction they’re heading in. Thanks, Mom, for giving me the most socially unacceptable of beauty products for Xmas.
Saving my hands from an ashy death was a great plan when there wasn’t anyone around. But now a half-dozen PR majors have shown up to work on their projects. PR kids only show up in the labs a couple times each semester, so they never really become familiar with the hardware or software we use here, which means they need lots of help, which is fine. Except that I absolutely reek of shea butter stinkiness.
Just when I thought I was gaining some credibility with the cute non-geeky girls down here, I regain my status as newsroom leper.
Obviously, letting me get bored while I’m on the clock is a problem.

I have my last midterm in forty minutes.
The prof gave us a study guide. For that, I am grateful.
There are eighteen potential long answer questions. We will be forced to answer at least two, but we don’t know how many there will be to choose from on the test. There are about seven that I would be pretty much unable to answer.
So what are the odds that I’m screwed?

There is a reporter here in the newsroom who is wearing a collared shirt backwards.
Is this the step that comes after popping the collar? Is this fashion or the results of sleep deprivation?
I’m so confused.
