I just skyped with a guy in Finland and it was AWESOME. No lag, excellent sound quality and wow, Finnish accents are kinda weird.

All the cool kids are doing it, I promise. This is even cooler than Facebook.

The silver anniversary

Tom and Lori, married November 24, 1979

Before Mom and Dad became Mom and Dad, they were really cute. Today is their 25th wedding anniversary, so I thought I’d dig up the wedding album and show off just how adorable they were back in 1979.

Mom, posing in her wedding gown

This is Mom, age 22. She told me that at this moment, she had about $29 to her name.

Dad, looking pensive or something

This is Dad, age 23. He experimented with the beard off and on until my first sister was born. Since then, he only tried it once more and was vetoed by pretty much everyone in the house. I would also like to point out how thin he is in this picture. Apparently when he met Mom, he’d been single for a while and had been working out a lot. He quit working out soon after. He’s still just as adorable, just with some gray hair and a gut.

Grandpa, forever in the poorhouse

This is Mom with her parents. Check out Grandpa’s awesome glasses and killer threads. He may be poor, but he’s stylin’.

plainclothes Mom and Dad

And here we have the freshly married couple, off to discover wedded bliss.

Belating the birthday

23
Nov
2004

As Rae pointed out, today is supposed to be my birthday.

Since the timing’s kinda crap (everyone fleeing the campus to go home for Thanksgiving), I’ve decided to postpone it. My roommate’s upcoming birthday is also inconveniently timed, falling on the night before a major test. So together, our birthday will be December 3, on which we are going to Kansas City for dinner with all the girls. And with booze.

Tonight will be spent with friends from high school, followed by a late-night drive back to Wichita, where I will wake up to birthday pie baked in my honor because my family is awesome like that.

Also, thanks to Stacy and Rick for the bobble-head Jesus. It made my day.

I could be rich

Some guy just emailed me and offered $10,000 for this domain.

Ten thousand for badpoetry.net? A domain name chosen originally as a tribute to my douche-bag ex?

I could buy a lot of nice things with ten grand.

I told him no.

“Santa will bring you nothing!”

Nov
2004

Yesterday, I did all of my Christmas shopping. All of it. Done. And it feels good.

But Katie being Katie, I got in some people watching. The best moment:

Cranky, fed-up child: Santa will get you nothing!
Cranky, fed-up mother: Well, Santa doesn’t really work for parents.

And of course my favorite part of Oak Park Mall is the “husband corral” in the middle of the ground floor, a lobby of sorts filled with oversized leather armchairs, where wives can deposit their bored husbands while they shop and spend all their husbands’ money. I have never seen so many zombied old men in one place. It was creepy and fascinating that same time.

So now I just need to wrap everything.

Western Civ is for suckers

I got up an hour and a half early this morning to write not one but two steaming piles of Western Civ papers. I’d just like to say that if my teacher seriously expects our class to write non-bullshit papers on what Chaucer means to us on a deeply personal level, she’s going to be damn disappointed.

If she keeps assigning these, I’m going to keep writing about how the Wife of Bath reminds me of Carrie from Sex in the City.

I am the fruit wizard

Today, while cooking, I invented a GENIUS NEW WAY to cut cantaloupe. And I am NOT TELLING HOW because it is my TRADE SECRET.

In other related news, I think someone drugged me because I have been stoned all day long and I’m pretty sure I didn’t take anything on purpose. This happens every few months, too. So to whoever’s been drugging me, thanks. It totally made my day. You know, besides the cantaloupe thing.
