Interviewing

Today I interviewed the last (I hope!) two people for my journalism final, and and I realized they both typified two categories of interviewees.

The first is shy, but sometimes gives really good answers. And then says, “wait, um, you’re not going to put that in the thing, right?” And having to leave that really great, quirky, interesting little quote out of my story is quite frustrating.

The second provides excellent answers and understands that anything she says might be published and sets boundaries for her answers accordingly. For that, I love her. I’ll probably even close the article with a quote from this person.

And later, when I’m putting off actually writing the damn thing, a classmate calls for a last-minute interview. Apparently interviewing a roommate is a conflict of interest, but interviewing the kid that sits next to you and knows exactly what sort of quotes you’re looking for isn’t. So I’m babbling away what I hope are useful answers and thinking in my head, “I hope I’m in the good category. I hope I give him whatever nugget of information he still lacks at this late hour.”

My paper is still not done and it’s half past midnight, which is later for me than it is for other people. Because sleep is sacred and I won’t lose any just for a final in the most important class I’ve taken so far.

In short, nothing ever changes.

PS > It seems I’ve recovered my blogging mojo. How many of my old readers had given up on me?
