Okay, as promised:
Cool shit I downloaded that may or may not interest you:
First off, WindowBlinds is a program that lets you skin Windows, if you’re into that. I suspect I will tire of it soon, but right now I’m having fun pretending to be a Mac user by using an OSX skin (complete with the little shrink-the-window-so-just-the-title-bar-shows thingy, which is really nice to have).
For my pirate buddies (arr!), check out ShareMonkey. It works with Kazaa (Lite, K++, Grokster and all other Kazaa relatives) to speed up downloads by constantly checking for more sources for the files you want. This is nice if you want to, say, download seasons four through six of Oz. Not that I, uh…am…doing…that. But if I were, let me tell you, ShareMonkey would make it go a lot faster.
This is the coolest thing I have seen in a while: StumbleUpon. It’s a toolbar (and I am soooo not a toolbar person) that works in IE, Netscape, Mozilla, AND Firebird (yay!) and when you press the “Stumble!” button, it takes you to a random site. But not just ANY random site. A site that some other stumbler rated as “great.” Let me tell you, there are some real dumbasses out there giving “great” ratings to shit websites. But, every once and a while, I stumble upon a really freakin’ awesome website.
It learns your preferences through filling out some forms and watching how you rate the sites you visit, and it’s rapidly getting better at finding me stuff I’d like. In fact, yesterday, as I clicked the button, I thought, “I should got to Diesel Sweeties and rate that as great so it’ll find me more comic strips,” and lo and behold, it loaded up the Diesel Sweeties, as if it had ESP. This really freaked me out.
Anyway, this is my user page, currently showing a portion of my bookmarks as the most recent “great” sites I ranked from when I was training it. So…yeah. StumbleUpon rocks my world.
Okay, that’s it for this episode of Cool Shit I Downloaded. Perhaps I’ll have another batch sometime soon.
