I’ve been drugged.

I feel weird.

Uh, a good weird.

An ambiguous good weird.

I think someone drugged me. With uppers.

If my anonymous druggist would let me know, I’d really appreciate knowing how you did it.

Out of curiosity, not because I want more.

Uh. Yes. That’s all.

I love the computer illiterate!

The first day I spent here at the house with my roommates, I amazed them with my computer know-how.

I mean, I was just replacing a hard drive in my computer, not doing brain surgery, but they hovered around, finally concluding with awe, “Oh my god, you’re a computer genius! It’s going to be so great having you around!”

“No, really, guys,” I protested, “this is really easy. You just open up the case, disconnect the old drive and plug in the new one. Of course you have to make sure the jumper is in the right place, but that’s really all there is to it.”

“Yeah, sure. I didn’t understand any of that, Katie. I’m just glad you do.”

So once or twice a day, I explain some everyday computer factiod and they ooh and ah about how amazing I am.

Today I started a redesign for the house website. And they’re in total awe that I could “make a web page, JUST LIKE THAT!” Hell, I was using a WYSIWYG editor to lay it out*. And suddenly I’m the patron saint of all things webby.

I love the computer illiterate.

*For all the notepad fanatics who are horrified that I use HTML editing software: When designing a site, the artist comes before the geek. I most always sketch out a design with crayons [yes, really] as the first step, making notes in the margins as to how it will need to be coded and things to pay special attention. Then I use a WYSIWYG editor so I can play around with things, rearranging until I find the basic layout that makes me happy. Until I’ve settled on the look, I don’t care about the perfectness of the code. After I’m happy with the prototype design, I unleash the geek to finish the job. I hand code most of the rest, cleaning up all the bullshit code and unclosed tags the editor leaves behind.

I need good movies

We’re finally getting around to updating our house website. Included on it is a list of what movies everyone has and is willing to share.

My list:

Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark The X-Files: Fight the Future The Secret of NIMH They Might Be Giants: Direct from Brooklyn

I don’t think I’d be ashamed of any of those individually, but together…it’s just sad. Some of my housemates still think I’m funny and interesting. This will reveal my true geek quotient and life will never be the same again.

And I’m having Mom mail me my copy of Life is Beautiful just to help create a more interesting balance.

Moped Envy

27
Jan
2003

Okay. So I was all excited about getting a moped. A shiny, new moped. A sleek, black moped. A moped that all the other students could mock, but secretly envy, as they do whenever they see a moped on campus.

But, damn, my moped sucks ass. It doesn’t go as fast as the others. It’s not as fancy as the others. It can’t make it up the hill as easily as the others. It does not enduce jealousy like the others.

I have killer moped envy. I never got that way about my car. My car sucked major ass, but I was damn proud of Big Blue.

Perhaps I need to give the moped a cool name. Like Killer.

Yeah, if I was riding around on something called Killer, I’d feel more badass, uh, right?

Hmm. Perhaps this is just a manifestation of my Freudian penis envy.

Recent Weather

Jan
2003

Yesterday, I sat for an hour on the attic stairs, watching ice form on the windows. It was so cold outside that water vapor inside the house was condensing and freezing on the glass. Here, it wasn’t much thicker than frost, but on one of the windows downstairs, there were ice chunks at least 1/4″ thick at the bottom of the window.

Today the sun came out,. And while it’s still below freezing, I’m much appreciative. I can’t take the cold anymore. It’s making me crazy.

Tomorrow, it’s actually going to be above freezing. What a delight.
