Haircut Theory

2002

For as long as I can remember, there has always been a distinct motivation for getting a haircut.

When I got the urge to get my hair cut, be it drastically or just a trim, it was always a sort of defense mechanism for dealing with my life.

If there was something I didn’t like that I wanted to change, I would get a haircut.

After every heartbreak, when I was ready to move on, I’d cut my hair. I can attribute a lot of haircuts in highschool to boys I loved.

I cut my hair really short during sophomore year. I kept it short for a while. Dad became suspicious that I might be a lesbian because of this.

And then a couple years ago, I took things into my own hands. I still couldn’t take active control over whatever was bothering me, but I could cut my own hair, damn it. Mom’s tried to take me to her hair stylist countless times over the last few months, but I always refuse. She doesn’t understand that it’s an expression of control to attack myself with scissors. Plus, I feel pretty good about myself when it doesn’t look completely shitty.

Justin let me cut his hair yesterday. I did a good enough job and it was cheaper to buy a $2 pair of scissors to do it with than to get it professionally done. But it didn’t give me that same satisfaction as doing my own hair.

And just a bit ago, Dad said to me, “Your hair’s getting long. For you, you know.”

Yeah, I know. I’ve let it get longer than it’s been since whatever heartbreak provoked me to chop it off two years ago. Or maybe I like it longer because I feel a little girlier than I used to. You know, I almost bought a dress today. I thought it might be nice to have a dress, just because every girl should probably have one.

But I thought about it. I haven’t really hadthat urge to snip away my golden locks in a while. Why? I was happy, totally content with my life.

Recent events have caused me some minor anxiety. It’s been a couple months. I could use a trim.

But I’ve had my eye on that red hair dye at the drug store…

UPDATE: I have orange hair now.

Katie’s Gold Box

I like Amazon. Yes, they’re overpriced but they’re thoughful.

And I LOVE this new Gold Box idea. Mena’s been discussing it over at dollarshort lately and I couldn’t help but get caught up with my own gold box.

Sure, they’re just trying to lure us into buying their overstocks by telling us that it’s a special 60-minute one-chance deal, but I’m falling for it.

At first, it was all techy stuff. Gadgets and DVD players. They hit the nail on the head there. Today I opened my Microsoft Wireless Desktop (mouse & keyboard), a $49.45 Gold Box find. AND I got free shipping on it. Hot dog! Yes, the reviews of it on the site are horrid, but I’m enjoying my newfound wireless freedom. If I could read my monitor from in bed, I’d be typing from there. Just because I could. Sadly, my vision is shit and my monitor is small.

Now my Gold Box has a bunch of kitchen crap. Mixers and cutting boards and juicers. Stuff I’d never buy. Not until I have my own kitchen anyway.

Maybe it’s all for the best. I’m a sucker for computer accessories and I need to quit splurgining.

Happy Birthday, Justin

Today is my sweetheart’s birthday. I remember on his last birthday he was less than excited to reach 21. “I didn’t want to be 19!” he protested.

Maybe this year will be easier to accept.

Happy 22nd, Justin. I love you.

I like Robot Stories. It makes me laugh.

See on the side where he gives special thanks to three people for supporting the t-shirt print run? That’s my name there. And I love my Robot Stories shirts. They’re the kind of shirts that people ask you about. And when you explain that it’s this really cool internet comic strip, people say, “oooh,” in that “what a geek!” way.

Oh, come on, you know you want to be a geek too!

Buy 10:B-C

Jun
2002

Well, while I was in California, Mr. FieldTrip’s new album 10-B:C came out.

It’s great, it’s loud, it’s finally here. When trying to describe MRFT, Justin and Jay settled for a mix between Radiohead, Pink Floyd, and Talking Heads. I, with my inability to classify music, have simply filed them under “Good Music.”

Here in Wichita, you should be able to get 10-B:C at Yesterday Discs [Lincoln & George Washington Blvd.].

OR you could contact me and I’ll get you one [I'll have a stash of them in a couple of days and I'll ship them to you if you like] for $10.

OR you could get them direct from the source, also for just $10. [Also, there's a preview file on that page, if you want a taste.]

Either way, get a copy of it. I mean, how can you not like a band that has this much fun with a sock monkey?

In other news, Justin has green hair now.
