Here in Katie’s Head

Lawrence Pilgrimage I

So I went on a road trip yesterday.

At 9:15 AM, I I filled up my gas tank got on the highway and headed to Ottawa. Two hours later, I arrived at Trent’s house. We hung out and watched a bit of TV and then went out to lunch. I think Trent will agree that there are tastier lunches to be had, but we had fun making fun of our gross food.

At 1:22 PM, I headed up to Lawrence. Twenty minutes later, I met Josh at his house. Oh, such a lovely house, too. We hung out for a little while and caught up on recent happenings and college excitement.

At 2:45 PM, I arrived at the FieldTrip house [a.k.a. House of Involuntary Abstinence]. That’s where Justin is staying until he gets his own place in Lawrence. I hung out with the guys, playing Nintendo, reading Justin’s just-completed Mr. FieldTrip comic book, eating veggie sushi, and doing my best to match wits with Shannon.

A sample conversation:

Shannon: [holds up MRFT promo picture] What do you think of this picture? Katie: It’s very nice. Shannon: And what about this guy? [points at himself in the picture] Isn’t he handsome? Katie: Oh, yes! He outshines all the others! Shannon: Outshines? That’s nice. HEY! Are you making fun of my bald head? Katie: No! There’s hardly any glare at all!

And later:

Shannon: You know, I’m basically a nice guy, wouldn’t you say? [all nod] Why is that? Why am I a nice guy? Mojo: [quietly] Sucker. Shannon: [points at Mojo, nods in agreement]

Sometime between 7:00 and 8:00, we went over to La Familia for dinner. It was tasty.

And then we hung out at the house some more. Justin bitched about turning on the air conditioner and Becky reminded him that it would cost more and the house is leaky so the cold air doesn’t stay inside anyway, adding that if he thinks it’s bad in May, he’ll surely die by August. “Fuck, I’ll have my own place by then!”

Around 11:30, everyone shuffled off to bed and Justin and I talked for a bit before I left. We exchanged our now ritualistic “I missed you, I love you, I’m glad you came to visit” dialogue and I headed back to Josh’s guest bedroom for the night.

Josh and I exchanged another 45 minutes of gossip and news before I finally went to bed around 1:00 AM.

I got up at 8:00 today, drank some orange juice, said my goodbyes and thank yous, and headed back home, playing my secret advance copy of the MRFT CD and singing along.

I’m really tired and I still have to go to work.

But that’s the basic outline of my trip.

  1. It’s true, lunch was pretty gross. But I had fun with Katie and the sweating turkey.
